Our Paediatric First Aid course
is a comprehensive, instructor-led two-day (12-hour) course
designed for people who work with, care for or have responsibility for infants and children.
The course incorporates the essential lifesaving skills covered by Emergency Paediatric First Aid and extends these to include a much broader range of childhood injuries, illnesses and medical emergencies.
Training has a strong practical focus, giving learners the opportunity to develop and demonstrate the skills needed to assess an emergency, provide appropriate first aid and obtain further medical assistance when required.
What does the course cover?
The 12-hour Paediatric First Aid course
covers a comprehensive range of paediatric first aid topics, including:
Role and responsibilities of the paediatric first aider
Assessing an emergency and carrying out a primary survey
CPR for infants and children
Safe and effective use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
Management of an unresponsive infant or child
Recovery position and ongoing monitoring
Choking in infants and children
Seizures and febrile convulsions
External bleeding, wounds and shock
Minor injuries, burns and scalds
Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
Head and suspected spinal injuries
Foreign bodies and injuries involving the eyes, ears and nose
Asthma and hypoglycaemic emergencies
Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
Emergency use of adrenaline, including practical use of an adrenaline auto-injector training device
Meningitis
Effects of extreme heat and cold
Electrical injuries
Suspected poisoning
Practical exercises are incorporated throughout the course, allowing learners to practise the assessment and management of realistic paediatric first aid emergencies using appropriate infant and child training equipment.
Who is this course suitable for?
The full Paediatric First Aid course is particularly suitable for people with a professional or caring responsibility for babies and children, including childminders, nursery and early-years practitioners, teachers and school staff, nannies, childcare workers, carers, youth workers and others working in settings where a comprehensive paediatric first aid qualification is required.
It is also appropriate for organisations whose first aid needs assessment identifies a requirement for staff to have more comprehensive paediatric first aid training than is provided by the one-day Emergency Paediatric First Aid course.
Regulated qualification
This course is available as a regulated Level 3 Paediatric First Aid qualification, providing independently assessed and nationally recognised certification.
The regulated course includes practical and knowledge assessment in accordance with the requirements of the awarding organisation. Learners must successfully demonstrate the required practical competencies and achieve the required knowledge assessment to gain the qualification.
Course duration
2 days – 12 hours of instructor-led training, excluding breaks.
The course is normally delivered over two full training days.
Course delivery
This course is usually delivered on demand at our clients' premises, making it particularly convenient for schools, nurseries, early-years providers, childcare organisations and other employers requiring group training.
By prior arrangement, the course can also be delivered at our training venue for a client group, subject to venue availability.
Group delivery provides an excellent opportunity for colleagues to train together and apply their learning to the types of situations they may encounter within their own working environment.
Certification
Successful learners receive the appropriate course certificate or regulated qualification certificate for the course option booked.
Training is delivered in line with current UK paediatric first aid and resuscitation guidance, with an emphasis on practical competence, confident decision-making and effective emergency response.
