Emergency First Aid at Work – 6 Hour Level 3 (VTQ) – EFAW

Develop the practical skills and confidence needed to respond effectively to a workplace first aid emergency.

Our Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) Level 3 (VTQ) course is a practical, instructor-led one-day (6-hour) course designed for people who are, or are preparing to become, Emergency First Aiders in the workplace.

The course provides essential lifesaving knowledge and hands-on practical training, enabling learners to assess an emergency, provide immediate first aid and summon appropriate medical assistance when required.

Training is delivered in accordance with the Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) 2025 Guidelines and current UK workplace first aid requirements, with a strong emphasis on practical competence, confident decision-making and effective emergency response.

Who should attend?

Emergency First Aid at Work is particularly suitable for nominated workplace first aiders and employees working in lower-risk environments, or where an employer's first aid needs assessment identifies EFAW as the appropriate level of training.

The course is suitable for organisations across a wide range of sectors, including offices, retail, hospitality, education, community and third-sector organisations, small businesses and other workplaces.

Employers should determine the appropriate number and level of trained first aiders through their workplace first aid needs assessment.

What does the course cover?

The Emergency First Aid at Work course covers essential workplace first aid skills, including:

• Role and responsibilities of the workplace first aider
• Infection prevention, consent and incident recording
• Assessing an emergency safely
• Primary survey and casualty assessment
• Management of an unresponsive casualty
• Adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
• Practical use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
• Recovery position and ongoing monitoring
• Seizures
• Choking
• External bleeding and wound management
• Recognition and management of life-threatening bleeding
• Shock
• Minor injuries
• Minor burns and scalds
• Summoning appropriate emergency assistance

Training is highly practical. Learners practise essential first aid skills using appropriate training equipment and participate in realistic first aid scenarios designed to develop confidence as well as competence.

Course duration

1 day – 6 hours of instructor-led training, excluding breaks.

The course is normally scheduled over approximately 7 hours including appropriate breaks.

Assessment

Learners are assessed throughout the course through continuous practical observation and knowledge assessment.

Practical skills form an integral part of the course, and learners must demonstrate the required first aid competencies to successfully complete the training.

Course delivery

This course is usually delivered on demand at our clients' premises, providing a convenient and cost-effective option for organisations requiring several members of staff to be trained together.

By prior arrangement, the course can also be delivered at our training venue for a client group, subject to venue availability.

On-site delivery allows practical exercises and scenarios to be considered within the context of the client's own workplace and emergency arrangements.

Certification

Learners who successfully complete the course and assessment receive a ProTrainings Emergency First Aid at Work Level 3 (VTQ) certificate, valid for three years.

Annual first aid skills and knowledge refreshers are recommended to help workplace first aiders maintain competence between formal renewal courses.

Minimum age: 14 years for classroom training.

Candidates should have sufficient command of English to understand the course content and complete the required assessments. If a learner may require additional support, please contact us in advance so that we can discuss what arrangements may be possible.

Need a regulated qualification?

For organisations or individuals who specifically require a regulated qualification, Vital Signs Scotland also offers the TQUK Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (RQF).
