First Aid at Work – 18 Hour Level 3 (VTQ) – FAW
Comprehensive three-day First Aid at Work training for people who need to take on the role of a workplace first aider.
Our First Aid at Work (FAW) Level 3 (VTQ) course is a practical, instructor-led three-day (18-hour) course designed for people who are, or are preparing to become, designated First Aiders in the workplace.
The course develops the knowledge, practical skills and confidence required to respond to a wide range of workplace injuries, illnesses and medical emergencies.
Training is delivered in accordance with the Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) 2025 Guidelines and current UK workplace first aid guidance, with a strong emphasis on practical competence, casualty assessment and effective emergency response.
Who should attend?
First Aid at Work is particularly suitable for designated workplace first aiders and employees working in environments where an employer's first aid needs assessment identifies the need for the more comprehensive FAW level of training.
It is suitable for organisations across a wide range of sectors, including construction, manufacturing, engineering, education, hospitality, warehousing, community and third-sector organisations, as well as other workplaces where the nature of the work, workforce or identified risks require more extensive first aid provision.
Employers should determine the appropriate number and level of trained first aiders through their workplace first aid needs assessment.
What does the course cover?
The First Aid at Work course includes the essential emergency skills covered by Emergency First Aid at Work and develops these further to prepare learners for a much broader range of workplace emergencies.
Topics include:
- Role and responsibilities of the workplace first aider
- Infection prevention, consent and incident recording
- Scene safety and emergency incident management
- Primary and secondary casualty surveys
- Adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Practical use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- Management of an unresponsive casualty
- Recovery position and ongoing monitoring
- Choking
- Seizures
- External and life-threatening bleeding
- Wound management
- Shock
- Minor injuries
- Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
- Head and suspected spinal injuries
- Chest injuries
- Burns and scalds
- Eye injuries
- Suspected poisoning
- Anaphylaxis and severe allergic reactions
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Asthma attacks
- Hypoglycaemic emergencies
Training is highly practical, with learners participating in hands-on exercises and realistic first aid scenarios designed to develop confidence as well as competence.
Anaphylaxis and emergency adrenaline
Current course content includes the recognition and emergency management of anaphylaxis, including the use of adrenaline.
Training includes practical use of an adrenaline auto-injector (AAI) training device and awareness of current emergency adrenaline options, including adrenaline nasal spray, where appropriate.
Course duration
3 days – 18 hours of instructor-led training, excluding breaks.
The course is normally delivered over three full training days.
Assessment
Learners are assessed throughout the course through continuous practical observation and knowledge assessment.
Practical assessment forms an integral part of the training, and learners must demonstrate the required first aid competencies to successfully complete the course.
Course delivery
This course is usually delivered on demand at our clients' premises, providing a convenient and cost-effective option for organisations requiring several workplace first aiders to be trained together.
By prior arrangement, the course can also be delivered at our training venue for a client group, subject to venue availability.
On-site delivery also allows practical exercises and scenarios to be considered within the context of the client's own workplace risks and emergency arrangements.
Certification
Learners who successfully complete the course and assessment receive a ProTrainings First Aid at Work Level 3 (VTQ) certificate, valid for three years.
First aiders should complete the appropriate First Aid at Work Requalification course before their current certificate expires. Annual first aid skills and knowledge refreshers are also recommended to help maintain competence between formal renewal courses.
Need a regulated qualification?
For organisations or individuals who specifically require a regulated qualification, Vital Signs Scotland also offers the TQUK Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (RQF).
Emergency First Aid at Work or First Aid at Work?
The appropriate level of workplace first aid training should be determined through the employer's first aid needs assessment.
Our one-day Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course covers the essential skills required to respond to common workplace first aid emergencies.
The three-day First Aid at Work (FAW) course provides substantially broader training for first aiders who may need to manage a wider range of injuries, illnesses and more complex workplace emergencies.
