Scottish First Aid at Work – SCQF Level 6 – 3 Day Course

Comprehensive First Aid at Work training leading to a regulated SCQF Level 6 qualification for workplace first aiders in Scotland.

Our Scottish First Aid at Work (FAW) SCQF Level 6 course is a comprehensive, practical three-day qualification designed for people who are, or are preparing to become, designated First Aiders in the workplace.

The course develops the knowledge, practical skills and confidence required to assess and manage a broad range of workplace injuries, illnesses and medical emergencies until professional medical assistance is available.

Training is delivered in accordance with the Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) 2025 Guidelines and current UK workplace first aid requirements, with a strong emphasis on practical competence, casualty assessment and confident emergency response.

Who should attend?

This qualification is suitable for employees who may be required to provide first aid following an accident, injury or sudden illness at work.

It is particularly appropriate where an employer's first aid needs assessment identifies the need for the more comprehensive First Aid at Work qualification rather than the one-day Emergency First Aid at Work course.

This may include organisations where workplace hazards, workforce size, location, working patterns or other identified risks require first aiders to have a broader range of skills.

What will learners cover?

The course includes the essential emergency skills required of a workplace first aider together with the assessment and management of a wider range of injuries and medical emergencies, including:

  • Role and responsibilities of the workplace first aider
  • Scene safety and emergency incident management
  • Primary and secondary casualty assessment
  • Adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Practical use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Management of an unresponsive casualty
  • Recovery position and ongoing monitoring
  • Choking and seizures
  • External and life-threatening bleeding
  • Wound management and shock
  • Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
  • Head and suspected spinal injuries
  • Chest injuries
  • Burns and scalds
  • Eye injuries
  • Suspected poisoning
  • Heart attack and stroke
  • Asthma and hypoglycaemic emergencies
  • Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
  • Minor injuries and workplace incidents

Training has a strong hands-on practical emphasis, allowing learners to develop and demonstrate their skills through practical exercises and realistic first aid scenarios.

Anaphylaxis and emergency adrenaline

Current training includes the recognition and emergency management of anaphylaxis, including appropriate use of adrenaline.

Learners undertake practical training using an adrenaline auto-injector (AAI) training device, together with awareness of current emergency adrenaline options, including adrenaline nasal spray, where appropriate.

SCQF Level 6 Qualification

Successful learners achieve a regulated First Aid at Work qualification at SCQF Level 6.

Qualification details:

  • SCQF Level: 6
  • Credit Value: 3
  • Guided Learning Hours (GLH): 18 hours
  • Course Duration: 3 days
  • Regulation: SQA Accreditation
  • Certification Validity: 3 years

This provides a formally recognised Scottish qualification for individuals undertaking the role of a workplace first aider.

Assessment

Assessment takes place throughout the course through practical demonstration and knowledge assessment.

Learners must successfully demonstrate the required first aid competencies and achieve the required knowledge outcomes to gain the qualification.

Course delivery

This qualification is available through scheduled courses and can also be delivered on demand for organisations at their own premises.

For group bookings, on-site delivery enables employees to train together and provides opportunities for practical exercises and discussion to take account of the organisation's own workplace, identified risks and emergency arrangements.

A suitable training space is required to allow learners to participate fully in practical exercises, including CPR and floor-based casualty-management activities.

Certification

Learners who successfully complete the course and assessment receive certification for First Aid at Work at SCQF Level 6, valid for three years.

Annual first aid skills and knowledge refreshers are recommended to help workplace first aiders maintain their practical skills, knowledge and confidence between formal requalification courses.

Why choose the SCQF qualification?

For organisations and learners in Scotland, an SCQF Level 6 First Aid at Work qualification provides a clearly defined Scottish qualification level and regulated certification.

This route can be particularly useful for Scottish employers, schools and colleges, public and third-sector organisations, training programmes and organisations where an SCQF qualification is required or preferred.

Emergency First Aid at Work or First Aid at Work?

The appropriate level of workplace first aid training should be determined through the employer's first aid needs assessment.

The one-day Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) qualification develops the essential skills required to respond to common workplace first aid emergencies.

The three-day First Aid at Work (FAW) qualification provides substantially broader training for first aiders who may need to manage a wider range of injuries, illnesses and more complex emergencies.

Need a different qualification route?

Vital Signs Scotland provides workplace first aid training through several certification routes, including SCQF, RQF and VTQ qualifications and courses.

This course leads specifically to a Scottish First Aid at Work qualification at SCQF Level 6.

If your employer, organisation or funding body specifies a particular qualification type, please ensure that you select the appropriate course.

Any questions?

If you are unsure whether Emergency First Aid at Work or First Aid at Work, or an SCQF, RQF or VTQ certification route, is most appropriate for your requirements, please contact us. We will be happy to discuss your requirements and help you identify the appropriate course.
