The First Aid at Work at SCQF Level 6 is a 3-day course and is for learners intending to act as a First Aider in the workplace. This qualification will provide all the required first aid skills necessary to manage a patient that is not breathing normally, is unconscious, bleeding or is ill or injured prior to the arrival of the emergency services.

The course is designed to provide the First Aider with the skills necessary to give effective basic life support, diagnose and treat minor and manage major injuries or illness keeping the patient alive until the emergency services arrive. This qualification will be enable the holder of this qualification to deal competently and confidently as a first-aid trained member of staff in the workplace.

This qualification has been accredited by SQA Accreditation and may be eligible for public funding. Each unit within the qualification and the qualification itself will have a unique reference number which is listed in this specification. The qualification title and unit reference numbers will appear on the learners’ final certification document. Learners need to be made aware of this when they are recruited by the centre and registered with FutureQuals.

This Level 6 SCQF Regulated Course allows you to become a fully trained First Aider in your workplace.

This regulated qualification is ideal for those already working or preparing to work within industry wishing to become a First Aider in the workplace for the purposes of the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981 and the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations (NI) 1982.

Pre-Course Requirement: Customers must be able to carry out the practical elements from the course outline. Minimum age 16.

Assessment Type: Continuous assessment by observation, practical and questioning.


Course Content:

  • Welcome and introduction
  • Roles and responsibilities of a first aider
  • Legislation and regulations
  • Accident recording, reporting and COSHH (Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations, first aid kits, accident records, RIDDOR and COSHH)
  • Dealing with an emergency (assessing a casualty, monitoring a casualty, where to get help, electrical incidents, lone worker)
  • Unresponsive and breathing adult (unresponsive and breathing adult and special considerations suspected spinal injury)
  • Heart attack
  • Angina attack
  • Unresponsive and not breathing adult (unresponsive not breathing adult, face shields and pocket masks, mouth to nose)
  • AED (use of an AED, AED Pad placement, chain of survival, safety considerations)
  • Choking
  • Hyperthermia (heat exhaustion, heat stroke and dehydration)
  • Hypothermia
  • Seizures
  • Burns (burns, electrical burns, chemical burns, chemical burns to the eyes)
  • Harmful substances (poisoning, swallowed, inhaled and injected harmful substances)
  • Hygiene techniques
  • Bleeding and wounds (bleeding heavily from a wound (limb, embedded object in a wound, scalp/head))
  • Shock (shock and internal bleeding)
  • Bleeding and wounds (bleeding heavily from a wound (palm of hand), crush injuries, penetrating chest wounds, abdominal wounds, amputation, small blisters and splinters, small bruises and wounds, nosebleed, eye wounds, bites and stings)
  • Diabetic emergencies (Hypoglycaemia and Hyperglycaemia)
  • Asthma
  • Severe allergic reaction (Anaphylaxis)
  • Stroke
  • Feeling faint
  • Head injury
  • Bone, muscle and joint injuries (fractures, dislocations, strains and sprains, spinal injury)

Regulated Qualification Details

This course gives learners the opportunity to gain a formally recognised regulated qualification . If you require funding, a regulated qualification is often required.
