Scottish First Aid at Work Requalification – SCQF Level 6 – 2 Day FAW Renewal

Renew your First Aid at Work qualification with a regulated SCQF Level 6 requalification course for existing workplace first aiders in Scotland.

Our Scottish First Aid at Work (FAW) Requalification – SCQF Level 6 course is a practical two-day renewal programme for existing workplace first aiders who hold an eligible First Aid at Work qualification.

The course refreshes and updates the comprehensive knowledge and practical skills required of a designated workplace first aider, while providing an opportunity to demonstrate continued competence across a wide range of workplace injuries, illnesses and medical emergencies.

Training is delivered in accordance with the Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) 2025 Guidelines and current UK workplace first aid requirements, with a strong emphasis on practical competence, casualty assessment and confident emergency response.

Who should attend?

This course is specifically designed for existing First Aid at Work-qualified first aiders who need to renew an eligible FAW qualification.

Learners must provide evidence of their existing First Aid at Work certification to confirm eligibility for the shortened two-day requalification route.

If your current FAW certificate has already expired, or you are uncertain whether your existing qualification is eligible for requalification, please contact us before booking. Depending on your circumstances, you may need to undertake the full three-day First Aid at Work course.

What will learners cover?

The course refreshes, updates and reassesses the comprehensive skills required of a workplace first aider, including:

  • Role and responsibilities of the workplace first aider
  • Scene safety and emergency incident management
  • Primary and secondary casualty assessment
  • Adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Practical use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Management of an unresponsive casualty
  • Recovery position and ongoing monitoring
  • Choking and seizures
  • External and life-threatening bleeding
  • Wound management and shock
  • Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
  • Head and suspected spinal injuries
  • Chest injuries
  • Burns and scalds
  • Eye injuries
  • Suspected poisoning
  • Heart attack and stroke
  • Asthma and hypoglycaemic emergencies
  • Allergic reactions and anaphylaxis
  • Minor injuries and workplace incidents

As learners attending this course are already experienced workplace first aiders, the programme provides an opportunity to refresh established skills, update previous learning and demonstrate continued practical competence.

Anaphylaxis and emergency adrenaline

Current training includes the recognition and emergency management of anaphylaxis, including appropriate use of adrenaline.

Learners undertake practical training using an adrenaline auto-injector (AAI) training device, together with awareness of current emergency adrenaline options, including adrenaline nasal spray, where appropriate.

SCQF Level 6 Qualification

Successful learners renew their regulated First Aid at Work qualification at SCQF Level 6.

Qualification details:

  • SCQF Level: 6
  • Credit Value: 3
  • Guided Learning Hours (Requalification): 12 hours
  • Course Duration: 2 days
  • Regulation: SQA Accreditation
  • Certification Validity: 3 years

This provides formally recognised Scottish certification for individuals continuing in the role of a workplace first aider.

Assessment

Assessment takes place throughout the course through practical demonstration and knowledge assessment.

Learners must successfully demonstrate the required first aid competencies and achieve the required knowledge outcomes to renew their qualification.

Course delivery

This qualification is available through scheduled courses and can also be delivered on demand for organisations with groups of eligible existing workplace first aiders.

For group bookings, training can be delivered at the client's premises, subject to a suitable training space being available for practical and floor-based activities.

On-site delivery also provides opportunities to relate practical exercises and discussion to the organisation's own workplace risks and emergency arrangements.

Certification

Learners who successfully complete the course and assessment receive renewed certification for First Aid at Work at SCQF Level 6, valid for three years.

Annual first aid skills and knowledge refreshers are recommended to help workplace first aiders maintain competence and confidence between formal requalification courses.

Important – existing FAW qualification required

This is a requalification course and is not suitable for learners undertaking First Aid at Work training for the first time.

Evidence of an eligible existing First Aid at Work qualification must be provided.

If your certificate has already expired, please contact us before booking so that we can confirm whether you remain eligible for the two-day requalification route.

An expired certificate should not be treated as continuing evidence of current workplace first aider competence while awaiting requalification.

Why choose the SCQF requalification route?

For existing first aiders working in Scotland, the SCQF Level 6 FAW Requalification course provides a shorter route to renewing a recognised Scottish First Aid at Work qualification, subject to the learner meeting the applicable eligibility requirements.

It can be particularly relevant for Scottish employers, schools and colleges, public and third-sector organisations, training programmes and organisations where an SCQF qualification is required or preferred.

Certificate already expired?

Don't automatically book the full three-day course.

If your FAW certificate has recently expired, contact us with the qualification details and expiry date before booking. We can determine whether the two-day requalification route remains appropriate or whether you need to undertake the full First Aid at Work course.
