Our First Aid at Work (FAW) Level 3 (VTQ) Requalification course is a practical, instructor-led two-day (12-hour) course for existing workplace first aiders who need to renew an eligible First Aid at Work certificate.
The course revisits the comprehensive range of First Aid at Work knowledge and practical skills while updating learners on current first aid practice and emergency response.
Training is delivered in accordance with the Resuscitation Council UK (RCUK) 2025 Guidelines and current UK workplace first aid guidance, with a strong emphasis on practical competence, casualty assessment and confident emergency response.
Who should attend?
This course is specifically for existing workplace first aiders who hold an eligible First Aid at Work (FAW) certificate and need to renew their qualification.
For this FAW Requalification course, your existing certificate must either still be valid or have expired no more than one calendar month previously. Evidence of your previous eligible First Aid at Work qualification must be provided.
If your previous certificate has expired by more than one calendar month, or you are unsure whether your existing qualification is eligible for the two-day requalification route, please contact us before booking.
Importantly, once an FAW certificate has expired, the individual is no longer considered competent to act as a workplace first aider until they have successfully requalified. HSE recommends that employers arrange requalification before the existing certificate expires.
What does the course cover?
The First Aid at Work Requalification course refreshes and reassesses the comprehensive skills required of a workplace first aider, including:
- Role and responsibilities of the workplace first aider
- Infection prevention, consent and incident recording
- Scene safety and emergency incident management
- Primary and secondary casualty surveys
- Adult Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Practical use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
- Management of an unresponsive casualty
- Recovery position and ongoing monitoring
- Choking
- Seizures
- External and life-threatening bleeding
- Wound management
- Shock
- Minor injuries
- Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
- Head and suspected spinal injuries
- Chest injuries
- Burns and scalds
- Eye injuries
- Suspected poisoning
- Anaphylaxis and severe allergic reactions
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Asthma attacks
- Hypoglycaemic emergencies
The course provides experienced first aiders with an opportunity to refresh established skills, update their knowledge and practise responding to realistic workplace emergencies.
Anaphylaxis and emergency adrenaline
Current course content includes the recognition and emergency management of anaphylaxis, including the use of adrenaline.
Training includes practical use of an adrenaline auto-injector (AAI) training device and awareness of current emergency adrenaline options, including adrenaline nasal spray, where appropriate.
Course duration
2 days – 12 hours of instructor-led training, excluding breaks.
The FAW Requalification course is normally delivered over two full training days.
Assessment
Learners are assessed throughout the course through continuous practical observation and knowledge assessment.
Practical assessment forms an integral part of the training, and learners must demonstrate the required first aid competencies to successfully complete the course.
Course delivery
This course is usually delivered on demand at our clients' premises, providing a convenient and cost-effective option for organisations with existing First Aid at Work-qualified staff requiring renewal.
By prior arrangement, the course can also be delivered at our training venue for a client group, subject to venue availability.
On-site delivery allows practical exercises and scenarios to be considered within the context of the client's own workplace risks and emergency arrangements.
Certification
Learners who successfully complete the course and assessment receive a ProTrainings First Aid at Work Level 3 (VTQ) certificate, valid for three years.
The Health and Safety Executive strongly recommends that workplace first aiders undertake annual refresher training during the three-year certification period to help maintain their first aid knowledge and practical skills.
Important – existing FAW qualification required
This is a requalification course and is not suitable for learners undertaking First Aid at Work training for the first time.
To undertake this two-day FAW Requalification course, your existing eligible First Aid at Work certificate must either:
- Still be valid, or
- Have expired no more than one calendar month previously.
Evidence of your previous First Aid at Work qualification must be provided.
Please note that the additional month should not be regarded as an extension or grace period to your existing qualification. Once your certificate expires, you are no longer considered competent to act as a workplace first aider until you have successfully requalified.
If your certificate expired more than one calendar month ago, or you are uncertain whether you are eligible for the two-day requalification route, please contact us before booking. You may need to undertake the full three-day First Aid at Work course.
